Growing up in suburban St. Louis (St. Charles, MO), I spent a lot of my time around people like me. Folks with similar education, work, economic and cultural backgrounds to mine. After high school graduation, I attended Lindenwood University in downtown St. Charles, majoring in education. While in college, I also worked a full time job at UPS, carried my own insurance, and ultimately graduated in three and a half years with a degree in education. Although my passion has always been to help and educate members of my community, my first full time job out of college was a continuation of my job while in college, with UPS.
Upon graduation, I moved from the greater St. Louis area to Kansas City, Missouri to begin my sales career with UPS. I also met my future husband (Tripp), who was enrolled in pharmacy school. After several years in Kansas City, my path with Tripp led me to his family’s home town of Charleston, Missouri, which is where we’ve raised our three children (Bennett, Amelia, and Anna Frances), and what I’ve called home for over 22 years.
When we moved to Charleston in 2002, I began substitute teaching in local school systems, until beginning my teaching career at Charleston R-1 School district, and later completing my masters degree in Library Science. Being an educator in a public school system, located in one of the poorest counties in the state (and country) has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life. For over twenty years I have been able to help members of my community learn and grow, but most importantly I have been able to build relationships with generations of local families. This is what I’m passionate about and what keeps me going.
The reason we chose Charleston, Missouri to call home was because this is where my husband Tripp chose to practice pharmacy, alongside. Alongside his father, Richard at L&S Pharmacy. While serving this community, both Tripp and I have had similar experiences, though from different perspectives. Healthy living is hard, especially in a rural area. Navigating today’s complex healthcare system is even harder. When presented with a complex healthcare need, if navigating the system is challenging for me, what about those that do not have access to a local pharmacist and healthcare team at their disposal? I observed challenges almost every day as an educator, and I also saw how important access to trusted resources could be to families in need. This recurring local need is what prompted me to transition from public school education to become a health care advisor and resource aggregator.
